Getting a Facial at the La Mer Spa in NYC
I spent my Monday afternoon relaxing with a 90-minute Baccarat Facial at the La Mer Spa in New York City. I have been using La Mer products for many years, and while the line is almost absurdly expensive, it has worked very well for my skin. Before I depart on a six-week trip to South America (where access to skincare products is limited to only what I brought with me), I wanted to treat myself.
Every treatment is centered around La Mer’s “Miracle Broth,” the main ingredient in each product that is said to help reduce scarring, irritation and numerous other skin concerns. According to the brand’s website, the Miracle Broth is what Doctor Max Huber, the founder of La Mer, spent 12 years and 6000 experiments creating in order to cure his scarring. It’s a fascinating story, and I recommend reading about the sustainable harvesting of the sea kelp that ultimately leads to these luxury products.
I thoroughly enjoyed my facial. It began with a double cleanse, followed by extractions that I desperately needed. I think my esthetician could have done more, as I had a very prominent whitehead on my chin that needed extracting that she left alone - if you’re looking for a very technical facial, the La Mer spa is not your best option.
After extractions, there was a series of products applied. Then the esthetician used crystals: one red and one blue, that were meant to relax and reduce stress. The facial was finished with a hydrating sheet mask applied over the entire face to seal in all the products, while I received a hand and arm massage.
Overall, the experience was lovely and luxurious. I definitely had a few complaints, regarding the extractions and the fact that no SPF was applied despite me having to go back outside into the summer NYC sun after my facial, but I don’t think one goes to spas like this for the technical expertise. It’s about the experience and in that regard the La Mer Spa does a great job. There are many other NYC spas I would like to try (especially the Caudalie spa) so I don’t think I will be back to the Baccarat for some time.
